Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs made his first appearance at a team practice session of the 2026 training camp on Sunday, marking a notable shift in his approach to contract talks even as he remained a non-participant in the on-field work.

Gibbs, who is heading into the final season of his four-year rookie deal, had stayed away from practices after clearing his physical and conditioning tests earlier in camp. Team observers noted that the organization seemed content to let the situation play out without pressing for an immediate return.

His presence outside with teammates on Sunday represented the initial time he has been visible at a practice since the Lions opened camp. He watched from the sidelines rather than taking part in drills, according to those on hand at the session.

The development comes amid ongoing discussions about a potential contract extension. Earlier reports indicated the two sides had not closed the gap significantly in recent days, leaving the running back’s long-term status unresolved as the preseason approaches.

Yet the decision to report for the outdoor session suggested some movement may have occurred behind the scenes. Gibbs appearing in that setting could signal that negotiations have advanced enough for him to begin shifting focus toward football activities again.

Lions coaches and front-office staff have not publicly detailed the status of the talks. The club has treated the matter as an internal process while continuing regular camp preparations with the rest of the roster.

Contract negotiations for young running backs often hinge on production history and market comparisons. Gibbs has established himself as one of the more explosive backs in the league during his first three seasons, blending speed and vision that have made him a central piece of Detroit’s offense.

A key reference point remains Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson, another highly productive back of similar age who is also expected to seek a new deal. Slight differences in career numbers and style could influence how the two contracts ultimately stack up against each other.

Saquon Barkley currently holds the distinction of the highest-paid player at the position, though he signed his deal at an older age than either Gibbs or Robinson. Both younger backs are widely projected to surpass that annual average once their extensions are finalized.

Detroit has signaled an understanding that Gibbs’ value exceeds prior benchmarks at the position. At the same time, the organization prefers to avoid setting a precedent that complicates future spending on other running backs.

The next week could prove pivotal. Further progress on financial terms would open the door for Gibbs to resume full participation, aligning the timeline with the remainder of training camp and the early preseason schedule.

For now, the Lions continue practicing without their top back on the field.

Gibbs’ mere presence Sunday offered the clearest indication yet that both sides may be moving closer to common ground on a deal that would keep him in Detroit beyond this season.
