In a significant move ahead of the MLB trade deadline, the Chicago White Sox agreed to acquire right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners, according to multiple reports. The deal sent reliever Seranthony Domínguez, outfielder Nolan Jones, and catching prospect Boston Smith to Seattle in exchange for the veteran starter.

The catch? The amount of money involved for the White Sox.

ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez has reported that the White Sox will absorb all of the remaining money on Castillo’s contract in the trade. That includes the pro-rated portion of his $22.75 million salary for the current season as well as the full $22.75 million owed next year. Castillo’s deal also includes a $25 million vesting option for 2028 that would trigger if he reaches 180 innings pitched in 2027.

That wouldn’t be so bad if Castillo were still his prime self, but he has struggled mightily this season, owning a 5.06 ERA and 1.395 WHIP over 20 appearances and 17 starts.

Castillo, a three-time All-Star, had long been a reliable presence in Seattle’s rotation since arriving from the Cincinnati Reds in a 2022 deadline deal. Over his first three full seasons with the Mariners, he posted a 36-29 record with a 3.50 ERA while making at least 30 starts each year, earning a reputation for consistency.

Things obviously went south this year, and with the right-hander now being 33 years old, you have to wonder if he has started to hit a wall.

That being said, Chicago desperately needed pitching, and Castillo was an available hurler.

At the very least, the acquisition adds experience and innings to a White Sox rotation in need of reinforcement.

The trade reflects different priorities for both clubs. Seattle, sitting just outside contention in the AL West, moves on from a pitcher whose velocity has declined slightly while still maintaining a solid fastball around 95 mph, paired with his trademark sinker, slider, and changeup.

Chicago, meanwhile, takes on substantial salary in a bid to bolster its pitching staff for a potential playoff push.

As the deadline approaches, the move stands out for the financial commitment the White Sox are making to secure Castillo’s services through at least next season.

Whether the change of scenery helps the right-hander regain his earlier form remains to be seen, but the structure of the deal, as detailed by Gonzalez, underscores Chicago’s willingness to invest in proven talent at a critical moment.
