Milwaukee Brewers supporters received encouraging news Friday regarding the club’s pursuit of Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal ahead of the trade deadline.
A report indicated the Brewers may secure the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner without surrendering the top prospect in their organization.
Former major league general manager Jim Bowden shared the development on the social media platform X. Bowden stated that the Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays are not expected to part with their highest-ranked farm system talents in any package for Skubal.
He specified the players involved as Jesús Made for Milwaukee and Theo Gillen for Tampa Bay.
“The Brewers are not going to include Jesus Made in any Tarik Skubal offer nor are the Rays going to offer Theo Gillen in a Skubal deal and rightfully so since its only a 3 month rental with neither team being able to afford him long term. But both teams still have enough to land him I am told,” Bowden wrote.
The assessment highlighted that both organizations possess sufficient depth elsewhere in their systems to assemble competitive proposals.
For Brewers fans, the information offered a measure of optimism about balancing short-term gains with long-term roster building. Made ranks as MLB Pipeline’s No. 1 overall prospect and stands as one of Milwaukee’s most prized developmental assets.
Retaining the young shortstop while adding a proven frontline starter would mark a significant achievement for the team’s decision-makers.
Skubal has posted a 2.79 ERA this season along with a 7-5 record. He has recorded 116 strikeouts, a 0.91 WHIP and limited opponents to a .210 batting average over 96.2 innings spanning 16 starts.
The left-hander becomes a free agent after the season, making any acquisition a short-term rental rather than a multiyear commitment.
Neither the Brewers nor the Rays are positioned to retain him beyond the current campaign under their financial structures. Bowden’s comments underscored that the limited control period justifies protecting elite prospects.
At the same time, he noted both clubs maintain enough additional talent to remain viable suitors.
No deal appears close to completion at this stage. Still, the update confirmed Milwaukee’s continued presence among the clubs capable of landing the Tigers ace.
Adding Skubal would strengthen the Brewers’ rotation for a potential postseason run. Preserving Made would simultaneously safeguard the foundation of the franchise’s future core.
The trade deadline approaches early next week, leaving limited time for negotiations to advance.
