This year he had posted a .246 average with four home runs, 20 RBIs and four steals in 56 contests before the injury interrupted his progress. At a time when the Cubs sit at 62-47 and occupy second place in their division, every contribution from a young, controllable talent carries extra weight.
Shaw’s blend of athleticism, defensive versatility and developing power has long made him an intriguing piece of the franchise’s future. That same profile has also placed him on the periphery of trade conversations as the Aug. 3 deadline approaches and clubs evaluate their needs for the stretch run.
While the Cubs have not indicated any desire to move him, the reality of a competitive roster and the value of young position players means Shaw remains a name that could surface in discussions if the right opportunity arises, especially when it comes to acquiring starting pitching — a major need for Chicago.
