While Kirk Cousins will likely open the season as the Las Vegas Raiders’ starting quarterback, you have to figure that No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza will see the field at some point in 2026.
The problem? The Raiders do not exactly have an embarrassment of riches offensively, which will present a tough environment for a rookie quarterback.
But there is still time for Las Vegas to make a move to bolster its receiving corps before Week 1, and among the remaining high-profile names, Stefon Diggs stands out for the combination of recent production and remaining athletic ability that still makes him an intriguing option.
Eamon Cassels of FanSided recently examined the most realistic destinations for Diggs, and the Raiders were named one of the top potential destinations for the four-time Pro Bowler.
Diggs arrives with a résumé that is difficult to ignore. Last season he topped 1,000 receiving yards as the clear No. 1 option for a New England Patriots team that reached the Super Bowl. That kind of reliability is rare for a player still seeking a new home as training camps open.
Off-field questions and a reputation for strong personality have clearly slowed the process, yet the on-field talent remains undeniable. For a franchise like the Raiders that finished 3-14 a year ago and is looking to accelerate its rebuilding timeline, the opportunity to add a proven target is hard to dismiss.
Las Vegas already possesses one of the league’s premier young tight ends in Brock Bowers, but the supporting cast outside is still developing. Tre Tucker, Jalen Nailor and Jack Bech have shown flashes, yet none has established himself as a consistent primary option.
Whether Cousins or the promising Mendoza ultimately takes the majority of snaps under center, the offense would benefit from a seasoned presence who can command defensive attention and create separation on intermediate and deep routes. Diggs has spent his career doing exactly that.
The schematic environment further strengthens the case. Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has demonstrated an ability to feature wide receivers effectively, most notably in unlocking Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s production a season earlier.
That system, combined with the volume of targets available in a still-evolving Raiders attack, offers Diggs a path to meaningful snaps and statistical opportunity similar to the one he enjoyed in New England. For a veteran seeking both a large role and a chance to contribute to a team on the rise, the silver and black present an appealing package.
Of course, nothing is guaranteed. Other clubs, including the Washington Commanders, Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts, also possess logical needs that Diggs could fill. Yet the Raiders’ combination of opportunity, scheme and long-term upside gives them a distinctive claim.
As Cassels observed, it would not be surprising to see Diggs ultimately land in Las Vegas. In a league where timing and fit often decide free-agency outcomes, the Raiders currently look well positioned to make that timing work in their favor.
