The New York Yankees could part ways with former first-round outfielder Spencer Jones as they pursue offensive upgrades before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, a New York Daily News writer has predicted.
Injuries have created a significant gap in the Yankees’ lineup, particularly with the absence of Aaron Judge. The team is expected to seek additional hitting to compensate, though such additions may require moving young talent.
Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News forecast an aggressive stance from the club in addressing both the batting order and the pitching staff. The Yankees have been linked to multiple high-profile names but have yet to complete any deals.
In examining the roster’s requirements and available trade candidates, Phillips suggested the organization would move decisively to fill the void left by Judge. He indicated the cost could include the departure of Jones.
“Injuries to Cody Bellinger, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton have put the Yankees in the market for a bat, especially a right-handed one who can play the outfield,” Phillips wrote. “But while Stanton and Judge have uncertain timelines, all three are expected back, meaning the Yankees would eventually have to create space on a roster that also includes the optionable — and tradeable — Jasson Domínguez and Spencer Jones.”
Phillips further observed that the Yankees are likely to pursue another catcher with urgency, given the limited offensive production from their current group behind the plate. Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers has been cited as a possible acquisition target, although the Twins are said to have shifted toward adding pieces themselves in hopes of contending.
Jones has spent the season moving between Triple-A and the major league roster. His performance in the Bronx has been modest, with a .230 batting average, .316 on-base percentage and .379 slugging percentage, along with three home runs in 36 games.
Trade speculation is nothing new for the outfielder, whose name has frequently surfaced in discussions about potential deals involving highly regarded prospects.
Jones addressed the ongoing rumors in comments reported by the New York Post, saying the constant chatter no longer affects him the way it once did.
“Obviously the Yankees being the Yankees, they’re always in a position to acquire,” Jones said.
“So in the minor leagues, I remember my first couple years, first times going through it, everybody’s kind of shaky, ‘What’s going on?’ People are thinking about that more than the game, and that’s not really the way to operate. But that’s just the reality of the situation. Obviously the older you are, and the more times you see guys moving to different places, guys coming, guys going, we just see it as part of it.”
The former first-round selection remains focused on contributing whenever called upon, even as the deadline approaches and roster decisions loom.
Whether Jones stays with the organization or becomes part of a larger transaction will depend on the Yankees’ ability to secure the reinforcements they seek while managing the eventual returns of their injured stars.
