Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott reported to the team hotel for training camp this week sporting apparel that immediately drew scrutiny from a prominent sports commentator.
The 33-year-old signal-caller, entering his 11th season with the franchise, chose a T-shirt marking Super Bowl XXX as he checked in Monday. That contest, played Jan. 28, 1996, remains the most recent championship for the organization after a 27-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Skip Bayless took to the social media platform X to criticize the wardrobe selection and the broader outlook surrounding the club.
“The Cowboys have convinced themselves they’re a SBowl team,” Bayless posted. “Dak, 33, arrived at camp wearing a T-shirt celebrating the last Dallas SBowl 30 yrs ago. He’s 2-5 in playoffs. Christian Parker, 34, is being hailed as the savior – the next great DC. He’s never called 1 defensive snap.”
Prescott has spent a full decade as the Cowboys’ primary quarterback since joining the roster as a fourth-round selection in 2016. During that span the team has reached the postseason multiple times yet has never advanced beyond the divisional round under his leadership.
His career playoff mark stands at 2-5. Dallas has also failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the past two campaigns, finishing with fewer than eight victories both years.
Last season the Cowboys posted a 7-9-1 record. Prescott produced strong individual statistics, but defensive shortcomings contributed heavily to the disappointing finish.
The organization is counting on first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker to reverse those trends. Parker, 34, arrives without prior experience calling plays at the professional level.
Bayless highlighted that lack of background in the same social media message, questioning the elevated expectations already attached to the new coordinator.
Training camp for the 2026 season is underway at the familiar California site. The Cowboys hope improved health and continuity on both sides of the ball can produce a return to contention after consecutive subpar years.
Prescott has long embraced the high standards that accompany playing for one of the league’s most visible franchises. Supporters note his consistency as a starter and his role as a locker-room presence.
Critics, however, continue to focus on the absence of deep postseason runs. The choice of commemorative clothing provided fresh material for those voices this week.
Bayless, a longtime observer of the team, has repeatedly expressed skepticism about the club’s ability to end its lengthy title drought under the current quarterback.
Whether the latest comments resonate inside the organization remains unclear as practices begin in earnest. The Cowboys open the regular season in September seeking their first Super Bowl appearance since the mid-1990s.
