As the MLB trade deadline draws near, the Milwaukee Brewers find themselves in a familiar position of strength and scrutiny.
Once again leading the National League Central and sharing the best record in baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the club must decide how aggressively to reinforce a roster built for October. Rotation depth has been tested by injuries, and the lineup could benefit from added power.
Against that backdrop, FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray has identified several potential targets, with shortstop Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels standing out as a particularly intriguing fit.
“Fun fit! The Brewers reportedly checked on CJ Abrams, and I can see them doing the same with Neto,” Murray wrote. “The interest in Neto is strong league wide, so it will not be cheap.”
Neto, still only 25 and not due for arbitration until 2027, offers a controllable piece rather than a pure rental. His bat has consistently graded as above average, delivering the kind of right-handed power that Milwaukee’s offense has lacked.
Defensively he has limitations at shortstop, but those shortcomings could be mitigated by the strong gloves already surrounding him in the Brewers’ infield. In that environment, his offensive contributions might outweigh the defensive questions that have followed him in Anaheim.
The Brewers’ left side of the infield has lacked a stable everyday solution at both shortstop and third base. Neto does not rank as highly as Abrams or Miami’s Otto Lopez on pure talent, yet that very ranking could work in Milwaukee’s favor.
He would likely require a lighter package of prospects than the elite names on the market, preserving more of the organization’s deep farm system while still addressing a clear positional need.
Murray’s assessment underscores that the interest in Neto is genuine and widespread, so the Brewers would have to move decisively if they decide he is the right match.
Whether Milwaukee ultimately pursues a blockbuster arm or a more measured upgrade like Neto remains an open question.
What is clear is that Murray’s naming of the Angels shortstop as a viable target reflects a realistic path: adding a young, controllable bat with power without fully depleting the prospect capital the franchise has long protected.
As the deadline approaches, that balance between ambition and sustainability will define how far the Brewers are willing to push in search of their first World Series appearance in more than four decades.
