The Boston Red Sox have endured a turbulent stretch in recent days, marked by both opportunistic moves and sudden setbacks as the trade deadline approaches.

Just as the club appeared to gain momentum by acquiring right-handed bat Curtis Mead in a deal that sent pitching prospect Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals, misfortune struck almost immediately.

In his debut with the organization, Mead was hit by a pitch and suffered a fractured wrist, sidelining him for an extended period and leaving the Red Sox still searching for the kind of productive right-handed presence they had hoped to install near the top of their lineup.

That need has now drawn attention toward Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez, according to reporting from ESPN’s Buster Olney.

Lopez has emerged as a standout performer this season, currently pacing the National League with a .329 batting average while posting a .363 on-base percentage and .490 slugging mark across 105 games. His nine home runs, 50 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases underscore a well-rounded offensive profile that blends contact ability with speed and modest power.

At 27 years old, he is enjoying by far the strongest campaign of his career, a clear step up from his previous high-water mark of a .246 average with 15 homers and 15 steals over 143 games the year before.

One rival executive familiar with Boston’s interest described him as a player who would fit well with the approach favored by Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, given Lopez’s emphasis on putting the ball in play.

Acquiring a shortstop of Lopez’s caliber would address the immediate gap created by Mead’s injury and bolster the lineup’s right-handed punch. Yet it would also introduce longer-term complications. Both Marcelo Mayer and Trevor Story are progressing through their recoveries, with Story expected back sooner.

Adding another middle-infield option capable of contributing meaningfully over multiple seasons could force difficult decisions about the futures of those two players, potentially rendering one or both expendable.

Breslow must therefore weigh the short-term gains against the club’s broader developmental and roster-construction goals, particularly when it comes to protecting promising young talent like Mayer.

As the Aug. 3 deadline draws nearer, the Red Sox remain active in conversations involving infielders, and Lopez’s name has become one of the more prominent ones linked to their search.

Whether a deal materializes remains to be seen, but the combination of Boston’s urgent need for offense and Lopez’s breakout production has made the possibility a compelling storyline in the final days before the market closes.
