The Philadelphia Eagles just made a massive move with defensive tackle Jalen Carter, signing him to a four-year, $152 million contract extension featuring $106 million in guaranteed money, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The deal — which runs through 2031 — could be worth up to $160 million with incentives, and it all but eliminates the Carter trade speculation that has been brewing since the early stages of the offseason.
It also makes Carter the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history.
While it’s great that the Eagles were able to keep such an important player of their defense long term, not everyone was happy with the move.
In the comments under Schefter’s X post reporting the move, some fans expressed their displeasure.
“$106 million guaranteed for a guy who’s only played two seasons is a massive risk, he’s been good but not proven enough over enough years to justify that kind of money yet,” one user wrote.
“Sooo….Ojomo is gone and we aren’t resigning Woolen. Does this mean Coop and Q are gone as well? Jalen’s contract will need to be restructured by extending him. Smitty needs an extension. We’re about to lose a lot,” another fan commented.
“BROTHER $106 million guaranteed for a player who hasn’t looked the same since his rookie year?” a third user wrote.
“So nobody wanted him in a trade, so they paid him,” said another.
The Eagles originally selected Carter with the ninth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. He enjoyed a spectacular rookie campaign, registering 33 tackles, six sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery touchdown.
Since then, Carter has been good, earning back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances as well as a Second-Team All-Pro selection, but he hasn’t looked quite the same since his stellar debut season.
That being said, Carter is still just 25 years old and is an integral piece of Philadelphia’s front seven, and losing him definitely would have stung.
