The Chicago Cubs marked a significant career achievement for shortstop Dansby Swanson on Monday, confirming the veteran has reached a full decade of Major League Baseball service time just before the start of their series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The announcement placed Swanson among a relatively small group of players who have logged 10 years in the big leagues. That threshold secures the maximum MLB pension benefits and positions him to eventually secure full 10-and-5 rights later in his current deal.

The milestone arrived as the Cubs prepared for a meaningful National League Central showdown at Busch Stadium. Chicago entered the day with a 59-46 record, sitting seven games behind the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers while holding second place in the standings.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals stood fourth in the division at 53-52. The four-game set carries extra weight for the Cubs as they continue pressing for a postseason berth in a competitive National League landscape.

Despite a somewhat inconsistent year at the plate, Swanson has remained a steady presence for Chicago. In 101 games this season, the 32-year-old is hitting .220 with a .299 on-base percentage and .413 slugging mark, adding 16 home runs and 61 RBIs.

His defensive work continues to stand out as one of the strongest elements of his game. Swanson ranks among the top National League shortstops with 11 Defensive Runs Saved and nine Outs Above Average, providing a reliable anchor for the Cubs’ infield all year.

The recognition of his service time comes during the fourth season of the seven-year, $177 million contract Swanson signed with Chicago prior to the 2023 campaign. Selected first overall in the 2015 MLB Draft, he previously won a World Series championship with the Atlanta Braves before making the move to the North Side.

Swanson’s longevity and consistency also underscore his role as a leader in a Cubs clubhouse that is expected to remain busy as the trade deadline approaches. Alongside second baseman Nico Hoerner, he has given Chicago a stable middle-infield foundation that allows the front office to target upgrades in other areas of the roster.

Team president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer and the rest of the decision-makers have signaled a desire to improve the club before the deadline. With Swanson’s defensive excellence and institutional knowledge already in place, the focus can shift toward addressing pitching needs or other gaps that could help close the gap on Milwaukee.

The Cubs have shown stretches of strong play this season, at times looking capable of challenging the top contenders in the National League. Other stretches have been less convincing, leaving them in a position where every series carries heightened importance.

Reaching the 10-year mark represents more than just a personal accomplishment for Swanson. It reflects the durability and professionalism that have defined his career from his early days as a top draft pick through his championship experience in Atlanta and his ongoing contributions in Chicago.

As the series against their longtime rivals begins, the Cubs will look to turn the milestone celebration into momentum on the field. A strong start against St. Louis could help them gain ground in the playoff race and build confidence heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

Swanson’s presence both on the field and in the clubhouse remains a constant for a franchise navigating the balance between contention and the need for additional roster moves.

The coming days will reveal how Chicago capitalizes on that stability while pursuing the improvements required to make a deeper postseason run.
