Kalen DeBoer continues to face intense scrutiny in his second season leading the Alabama Crimson Tide, where an 11-4 record and a Rose Bowl appearance have done little to silence critics.
The program’s lofty standards, shaped by decades of dominance under Nick Saban and earlier under Bear Bryant, leave little room for anything short of national championship contention.
DeBoer sits at 20-8 overall since taking over, a mark that stands in sharp contrast to Saban’s final five seasons, during which the Tide lost just eight games in total.
Beyond the win-loss ledger, questions have centered on DeBoer’s demeanor and public messaging. Unlike the intense, confrontational style long associated with Saban, DeBoer has projected a more reserved presence that has not always sat well in Tuscaloosa.
That tension flared again after SEC Media Days, when DeBoer was asked whether national titles would define his tenure at Alabama. His response indicated he was not focused on that outcome as the sole measure of success.
The reaction was swift.
ESPN’s Paul Finebaum shared on First Take that a former Alabama player—one who won national championships under Saban—had contacted him to express strong disapproval.
“I spoke this morning to a former Alabama football player, a prominent player, who played for and won championships. National Championships, not CFP road wins,” Finebaum said. “… He said, ‘What Kalen DeBoer said yesterday is the reason why he will not succeed, nor will he ever win a National Championship.’ You have to have the DNA to do it. I know how fans think, I know how former players think, and I know what the money people think. They did not like what he said yesterday.”
Alabama claimed six national titles under Saban and another six under Bryant. In that environment, any suggestion that championships should not primarily define a coach’s legacy is viewed by many as a fundamental mismatch with the program’s culture.
Finebaum’s source framed the issue in terms of mindset and institutional expectation rather than pure results to date.
DeBoer does bring a recent track record of high-level success, having guided Washington to a national championship game appearance in 2023 before moving to Tuscaloosa. Supporters argue that 28 games is still a limited sample and that patience remains warranted.
Yet the former player’s pointed critique underscores a broader tension: at Alabama, the demand for an uncompromising championship mentality remains non-negotiable for many connected to the program, regardless of early returns on the field.
