Past trade deadline efforts have not always delivered the kind of transformative talent the organization hoped for, even after positive contributions from players such as Harrison Bader and Jhoan Duran in the previous campaign. Those additions provided some help, yet the overall impact fell short of what is required to consistently reach deep October runs.
This time around, the Phillies have identified three primary areas that need attention. Reliable starting pitching ranks high on the list, alongside the search for a productive right-handed bat in the outfield and several high-leverage options for the relief corps.

Additional arms capable of locking down critical moments would go a long way toward stabilizing the late innings.
One potential solution has already drawn public attention from a prominent baseball insider. In a somewhat unexpected development, Bob Nightengale of USA Today shared that the Phillies “would love to bring back Jeff Hoffman of the Toronto Blue Jays.”
That statement immediately sparked discussion about a possible reunion between the veteran reliever and his former club. Hoffman enjoyed his strongest stretches while pitching in Philadelphia during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He even earned an All-Star selection in 2024, showcasing the kind of dominance that made him a valued piece of the Phillies’ bullpen.
After agreeing to terms with the Blue Jays during the 2024-2025 offseason, Hoffman encountered significant challenges, particularly when tasked with closing games. One of the most memorable low points came when he surrendered a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning during Game Seven of the 2025 World Series, allowing the opposing team’s ninth-place hitter to deliver the crucial blow.
Heading into the 2026 campaign, Hoffman retained the closer role for Toronto but eventually lost it after compiling a 6.23 earned-run average through the early portion of the year leading into June. Those struggles raised questions about his long-term effectiveness in high-leverage spots.
Yet the 33-year-old has shown clear signs of a turnaround beginning June 1. Across 17 1/3 innings in that stretch, he has limited opponents to a 1.56 earned-run average, a 0.92 WHIP, and just three earned runs in total.
The improved command and results suggest he may have rediscovered the form that once made him so effective. If Hoffman can sustain this level of performance, he would represent an attractive target for any club seeking bullpen reinforcement.
A return to Philadelphia, where he previously thrived, carries particular intrigue given the shared history and the team’s current needs. Whether the Phillies ultimately pursue him or explore other options, their willingness to act aggressively at the deadline could prove decisive.
