The Chicago Cubs are eyeing a significant boost to their pitching staff ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, with one prominent analyst predicting a deal that brings a multi-time All-Star starter to the North Side.
The Cubs sit at 57-45 this season and trail the Milwaukee Brewers by seven games in the National League Central. Injuries have thinned their rotation, making starting pitching the clear priority as the club looks to climb the standings and secure a playoff spot.
MLB analyst Mike Axisa of CBS Sports has floated a bold scenario in which the Cubs acquire right-hander Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets. The Mets appear headed toward seller status, creating an opening for Chicago to act.
“The Cubs and Mets are a trade partner match made in deadline heaven,” Axisa wrote. “This next bold prediction says these two teams will indeed hook up for a deadline trade, with multiple Mets pitchers landing on the North Side. Peralta is an obvious one, given his connection to manager Craig Counsell from their days with the Brewers.”
Peralta’s numbers this year with New York have not matched the expectations that came with his arrival. In 21 starts, he has posted a 5.01 ERA while striking out 110 batters across 109.2 innings. Consistency has been an issue from outing to outing.
Last season with the Brewers, however, Peralta delivered a standout performance that established him as a reliable front-line arm. That track record, combined with his history under Counsell in Milwaukee, makes him an appealing bounce-back candidate for teams willing to take the chance.
Cubs officials have watched multiple arms go down this year and understand the value of adding depth before the postseason push. Landing Peralta would give the club another experienced starter capable of handling high-leverage innings in October.
The right-hander is scheduled to reach free agency after the season, which could work in Chicago’s favor. A strong finish in a Cubs uniform might raise his market value while providing the team with a temporary ace without a long-term commitment beyond 2026.
If the trade materializes, the Cubs’ projected rotation could feature Peralta alongside Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Jameson Taillon, David Peterson and Colin Rea once the staff returns to full health. That kind of depth would give Counsell flexibility in lining up his pitchers for a potential deep playoff run.
Front-office decision-makers know the current collective bargaining agreement expires after this season, raising the possibility of a lockout. Moving aggressively now allows the Cubs to maximize their window while the roster remains intact.
Peralta’s familiarity with Counsell’s approach could ease any transition and help the pitcher rediscover the form that once made him a consistent All-Star. For a Cubs team already sitting among the stronger clubs in the National League, that kind of addition might prove decisive.
Rival clubs will likely monitor the Mets’ willingness to deal, but Chicago’s need and the existing personal ties position the Cubs as a logical destination. Whether the predicted swap comes to pass remains to be seen, yet the logic behind it continues to draw attention as the deadline nears.
In the meantime, the Cubs will keep evaluating available arms and measuring the cost of acquiring one capable of stabilizing the rotation.
Peralta represents one of the more intriguing names still available, and Axisa’s projection has only heightened the discussion around a possible reunion of sorts on the North Side.
