The Denver Broncos could have a difficult roster decision looming before the start of the 2026 season, as one recent prediction suggests veteran wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey may not survive final roster cuts.
Jeff Legwold of ESPN recently ran down his 53-man roster projection for the Broncos, and Humphrey did not make the cut.
It’s not surprising that the 6-foot-4 pass-catcher could be in some danger as Denver continues to reshape its receiving corps ahead of the regular season.
The Broncos have added more talent and competition at the position, making it increasingly difficult for veteran depth players to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.
Humphrey has been a familiar face in head coach Sean Payton’s system throughout his NFL career, earning opportunities because of his versatility, physicality, and willingness to do the dirty work. While he has never been a high-volume pass catcher, he has carved out a role as a dependable blocker and possession receiver capable of contributing in key situations.
For a polarizing quarterback in Bo Nix who needs all the help he can get heading into his pivotal third season, you would think Humphrey would have some value due to his size along.
The Broncos clearly valued those traits earlier this offseason when they brought Humphrey back on a one-year contract. After returning to Denver late in the 2025 campaign (he previously spent some time with the New York Giants), he appeared in seven regular-season games before making an impact during the playoffs, including hauling in a 29-yard touchdown reception in the team’s Divisional Round victory over the Buffalo Bills.
Despite that postseason contribution, Denver’s receiver room has become much more competitive. The arrival of additional playmakers has increased the battle for roster spots, and younger receivers with greater long-term upside could ultimately push Humphrey down the depth chart.
Training camp and preseason performances will likely determine whether the veteran can once again earn a place on the active roster.
Humphrey’s experience in Payton’s offense may still work in his favor. Coaches value players who understand the scheme, contribute on special teams, and are willing to embrace complementary roles. Those qualities have helped Humphrey remain in the league despite facing roster challenges throughout his career.
For now, however, any talk of Humphrey’s departure remains speculative. The Broncos have not indicated they plan to release the veteran, but with tough roster decisions approaching, he has emerged as one of the players to watch.
If Denver prioritizes youth and upside at wide receiver, Humphrey could find himself searching for another opportunity despite his familiarity with the organization and his ability to deliver when called upon.
