As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for the 2026 season, few players on the roster carry as much personal stakes as linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, the former Texas standout finds himself at a critical juncture where performance and durability could shape the next chapter of his professional career, and Jon Machota of The Athletic feels he could ultimately lose his job if he doesn’t turn things around.

Overshown possesses the kind of talent that turns heads when he’s on the field. At his best, he stands out as the Cowboys’ most dynamic linebacker, bringing speed, instincts, and playmaking ability that can elevate an entire defense.

Yet recurring knee injuries have severely limited his availability, forcing him to miss a significant number of games—32 over the past three seasons. That kind of inconsistency creates uncertainty, especially in a contract year.

For Overshown, this season represents more than just another campaign in Dallas. A healthy, productive year would likely position him for a substantial new deal, rewarding the flashes of excellence he’s shown and solidifying his role as a cornerstone of the linebacker group.

The Cowboys have seen what he can do when fully fit, and a strong showing could quiet concerns about his long-term reliability.

On the other hand, another season interrupted by injuries could leave him heading into free agency with diminished leverage.

Without a full slate of games to demonstrate consistency, he might face more modest offers from teams wary of investing heavily in a player with durability questions. The margin for error feels slim, as the organization weighs his potential against the practical realities of roster building.

While other Cowboys like offensive tackle Tyler Guyton and wide receiver George Pickens also face important seasons, Overshown’s situation stands out because of the immediate contract implications.

Guyton likely has more runway even if 2026 brings challenges, and Pickens figures to command interest on the open market regardless. Overshown, however, needs to prove he can stay on the field to secure his future in Dallas or elsewhere.

Training camp and the upcoming games will offer the first real tests. If Overshown can build momentum and deliver the kind of impact many believe he’s capable of, it could mark the beginning of a more stable and rewarding phase in his career.

For a player with undeniable upside, 2026 is the year to turn potential into proven production.
