For much of the 2026 season, the teams most frequently linked to Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal have been the usual big-market contenders. The Dodgers. Cubs. Braves. Phillies. Yankees. Those clubs all have the prospect capital and the urgency to pursue arguably the best pitcher available ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline. But one club has quietly entered the conversation in a way few expected: the Tampa Bay Rays.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Rays are among the teams showing legitimate interest in Skubal, and perhaps more notably, Rosenthal identified left-handed pitching prospect Ian Seymour as a potential headliner in a deal.
That alone makes Tampa Bay one of the more fascinating trade fits on the market.
The Rays have never been afraid to make aggressive moves when they believe a championship window is open. Despite operating with one of baseball’s smaller payrolls, the organization has consistently shown a willingness to deal from its deep farm system for impact major league talent.
Acquiring Skubal would represent exactly that.
The reigning two-time American League Cy Young Award winner is a bona fide ace capable of transforming any postseason rotation. For a Rays club that has built its identity around elite pitching, adding Skubal would immediately give Tampa Bay one of the most formidable October staffs in baseball.
The biggest question, of course, is cost.
Rosenthal’s report mentioning Seymour as a possible centerpiece is significant because it offers the first real glimpse into what a Rays package could resemble.
Seymour has developed into one of Tampa Bay’s better upper-level pitching prospects. The left-hander has steadily climbed through the system thanks to strong command, an improving arsenal and the ability to miss bats. While he may not possess Skubal’s overpowering stuff, he profiles as a controllable starting pitcher—exactly the type of asset Detroit would seek if it ultimately decides to move its franchise ace.
Still, Seymour alone would not come close to getting a deal done.
Given Skubal’s résumé and the expected bidding war, the Tigers would almost certainly demand multiple premium assets, likely including additional top prospects and young major league talent. Tampa Bay’s deep farm system gives president of baseball operations Erik Neander flexibility to construct that type of package without completely gutting the organization’s future.
What makes the Rays particularly intriguing is their history.
Time and again, Tampa Bay has found ways to identify undervalued talent, maximize player development and remain competitive despite financial limitations. Landing Skubal would be an uncharacteristically splashy move, but one that aligns with an organization looking to capitalize on another opportunity to contend.
Whether Detroit ultimately entertains offers remains the biggest unknown. The Tigers have climbed back into the playoff picture after a difficult first half, creating a complicated decision for president Scott Harris. Trading one of baseball’s premier pitchers while still in contention would be an extraordinarily difficult sell.
Yet if the Tigers decide the long-term value outweighs a playoff push, there may not be a better time to move Skubal. The Rays, once viewed as a long shot, suddenly appear firmly in that conversation. And if Rosenthal’s reporting is any indication, Seymour could be the name that starts those negotiations.
