Former Los Angeles Angels pitcher Packy Naughton has announced his retirement from professional baseball at the age of 30.

While baseball careers are often measured by statistics, milestones, and longevity, Naughton’s journey represented something much more difficult to quantify: perseverance.

From the moment he entered professional baseball, he faced the challenges that test every pitcher’s determination, and he continued to answer those challenges with the same qualities that defined him throughout his career — preparation, toughness, and an unwavering commitment to the game.

Unfortunately, injuries ended up derailing him, and that is why he ended up retiring at such a young age.

The Angels acquired Naughton in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds organization in 2020, giving the left-handed pitcher an opportunity to continue developing within the organization’s system. That opportunity eventually led to his Major League debut with Los Angeles in 2021, when he fulfilled the dream every young player works toward: stepping onto a Major League mound.

Though his time with the Angels was brief, Naughton’s impact was felt by those who watched him work. He brought a professional approach every day, embracing the process of improving his craft and competing against some of the best hitters in the world.

Making it to the Major Leagues requires talent, but staying prepared through adversity requires something more. Naughton consistently demonstrated that resilience.

After his time with Los Angeles, Naughton continued his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he found opportunities to contribute at the Major League level. His career included 37 Major League appearances, and his journey was shaped by the many challenges pitchers face, particularly the physical demands placed on the arm.

Injuries became a significant part of Naughton’s story. Multiple setbacks tested his ability to return to the mound, but each rehabilitation process showed the same determination that had carried him through the minor leagues and into the Major Leagues.
