The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback carousel continues to spin as the 2025 season looms on the horizon, with second-year passer J.J. McCarthy emerging as the frontrunner to lead the team.

Despite persistent whispers tying the Vikings to veteran superstar Aaron Rodgers, head coach Kevin O’Connell is signaling confidence in McCarthy as the team’s starting quarterback for the upcoming campaign.

The Vikings’ quarterback room underwent a dramatic overhaul once free agency kicked off. Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, and Nick Mullens all departed for new opportunities, leaving McCarthy as the last man standing.

While the exodus thinned Minnesota’s depth chart, it also thrust the 2024 first-round pick into the spotlight.

Selected 10th overall in last year’s NFL draft, McCarthy’s rookie season was abruptly halted by a season-ending meniscus injury in August, sidelining him for the entirety of 2024. Now, with a clean bill of health and an offseason of preparation under his belt, the young quarterback appears poised to take the reins.

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, however, has kept speculation alive regarding a potential blockbuster move for Rodgers. Addressing the rumors last week, Adofo-Mensah refused to definitively close the door on the possibility.

“For me to sit here and say anything is 100% forever, that’s just not the job,” he said, leaving just enough ambiguity to fuel the ongoing chatter.

Until Rodgers, a perennial Pro Bowler and former MVP, puts pen to paper with another team, the Minnesota Vikings will likely remain part of the conversation—whether they’re actively pursuing him or not.

For now, the Vikings’ focus appears to be squarely on McCarthy. Coach O’Connell has been vocal about his enthusiasm for the 22-year-old’s progress. Speaking on “This Is Football,” O’Connell didn’t hold back his excitement.

“I’m really confident and really excited to see him hit the ground running. He’s had a great offseason, and I can’t wait to get going with him once OTAs get going.”

The comments suggest that Minnesota’s coaching staff is fully committed to building around McCarthy as Organized Team Activities approach, viewing him as the cornerstone of their offensive plans.

Still, the Vikings aren’t naive about the realities of the NFL. With McCarthy as their lone quarterback currently under contract, the team is expected to bolster the position before the 2025 season kicks off—whether through a veteran signing, a trade, or a draft pick.

But as things stand on March 31, 2025, all signs point to McCarthy taking the field as Minnesota’s Week 1 starter.

The Rodgers rumors may persist, but the Vikings seem content to let their young quarterback prove his worth. After a lost rookie year, J.J. McCarthy’s sophomore season could mark the beginning of a new era in Minnesota—or at least provide clarity on whether the team’s future lies with him or a certain graying gunslinger still dominating headlines.
