The San Antonio Spurs entered the offseason with a few clear needs on their roster. They have a superstar foundational piece in Victor Wembanyama and need to start upgrading the team around him. Chris Paul will be one of the players to help.
In the 2024 NBA Draft, they landed a potential long-term running mate for him in the backcourt in Stephon Castle. The UConn lead guard helped the Huskies win the 2024 NCAA Championship in dominating fashion and should be a great two-way performer moving forward.
Luckily for Castle, he will get to learn from one of the best to ever do it during his rookie season. On Sunday night, NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that the San Antonio Spurs had agreed to a deal with veteran Chris Paul.
It is a one-year, $11 million deal for the future Hall of Famer. He didn’t last very long on the open market after the Golden State Warriors decided to release him to avoid the $30 million guarantee triggering on his contract.

The 2024-25 season will be Chris Paul’s 20th in the NBA. He will be tasked with helping Gregg Popovich instill a winning culture again in San Antonio and to help the development of the young players on the team.
The San Antonio Spurs production on the court should skyrocket this upcoming season. Not only because of Wembanyama being one more year developed but because they now have several legitimate point guard options on the team.
Last season, they spent a chunk of the season with Jeremy Sochan running the offense. It wasn’t something he had ever done before and the production certainly proved that to be the case.
Things ran more smoothly with Tre Jones at point guard, but his upside is capped. With Castle and Chris Paul now in line for a bulk of the point guard minutes with Jones, this offense will reach new heights.
Still chasing that elusive NBA Championship, it will be interesting to see if Chris Paul remains with the San Antonio Spurs for the entire season. If they are out of the playoff race, his name will assuredly come up in trade rumors.
