The Los Angeles Chargers underwent some major changes on the offensive side of the ball this offseason. New general manager Joe Horitz and head coach Jim Harbaugh cleaned house, looking to get the salary cap situation under control.
That left quarterback Justin Herbert with limited weapons. Wide receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen are both gone. Williams was released and signed with the New York Jets, while Allen was traded to the Chicago Bears.
Running back Austin Ekeler, a top weapon in the passing game, signed with the Washington Commanders. Tight end Gerald Everett joined Allen on the Bears as a free agent.
That leads Herbert with Joshua Palmer, Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey as his top three wide receivers. Wide receiver DJ Chark and tight end Hayden Hurst were signed in free agency as well.
With a massive need at wide receiver, could the Los Angeles Chargers get in on the CeeDee Lamb sweepstakes? The Dallas Cowboys star has not been present this offseason as he awaits a new contract.
While it would be shocking to see the Cowboys not work out a deal with their superstar wide receiver, the closer we get to training camp the more rumors are going to pick up. Over at Bleacher Report, Brad Gagnon has pitched a blockbuster trade that sends Lamb out west.
In Gagnon’s proposal, Lamb lands with the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for a future first-round pick and McConkey, McConkey was a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Georgia.
“In this case, it would be a chance for Jim Harbaugh and Co. to maximize their support for Justin Herbert at a critical juncture of his career. And like New England, the Los Angeles Chargers have the cap space while also not being considered a primary contender.
Dallas would struggle to turn down the immediate cap savings and the significant 2025 draft capital influx, especially with a bright young receiver in Ladd McConkey coming back to try to strike gold with Dak Prescott,” Gagnon wrote.
This would be a shocking trade to go down regardless of how much sense the actual proposal makes. The Cowboys would be happy to receive a high-upside receiver on a rookie deal and premium draft capital.
That first-round pick could easily be in the top half of the first round as the Los Angeles Chargers aren’t considered contenders this season. Even with Lamb in the mix, it is hard to envision a path to the postseason for Los Angeles in a loaded AFC and having to compete with the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.
