The 2024 NBA offseason is a major one for the Los Angeles Clippers. One major move was already made, as head coach Tyronn Lue agreed to an extension, ensuring no one would poach him this offseason.
They have some major questions when it comes to their roster, as their core of Kawhi Leonard, James Harden and Paul George may not be back. Los Angeles is also going to look different on the bench.
On Tuesday, it was announced that an addition has been made to Tyronn Lue’s coaching staff. Former head coach and ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy will be returning to the sidelines as the Los Angeles Clippers’ lead assistant.
For years, teams around the NBA have pursued Van Gundy to return to the sidelines full-time as a coach. No one has been able to get him back before Tyronn Lue and the Clippers convinced him recently.
Van Gundy was an analyst with ESPN for 16 seasons before the 2023-24 campaign. During that time, he turned down overtures from the NBA, but was still active in coaching and scouting, having a role with Team USA.
But, he did return to the league in some capacity this season. He took a job with the NBA Champion Boston Celtics, working alongside Brad Stevens in the team’s front office. Once you scratch that itch once it is hard to stop, as Van Gundy will now be returning to the sidelines as Tyronn Lue’s lead assistant.
The two have a great relationship as members of the Team USA coaching staff in the past. One season that Tyronn Lue played for the Houston Rockets, Van Gundy was also his head coach.
Houston was one of two head coaching jobs that Van Gundy has held in the NBA. The other was with the New York Knicks in the 90s, replacing the legendary Pat Riley. With New York, he went 248-172 in the regular season and 37-32 in the postseason with one trip to the NBA Finals in 1999. Overall, he was 430-318 in the regular season and 44-44 in the postseason.
