The biggest storyline involving the Dallas Cowboys is the contract extension for quarterback Dak Prescott. Entering the final season of his current deal, there has been no traction on a long-term deal between the two sides.
In 2021, Dak Prescott signed a four-year, $160 million deal with the Dallas Cowboys. People have wondered why an extension hasn’t come along yet, especially since the team cannot use the franchise tag on him in 2025. His contract also possesses a no-trade clause, so he has say over where he will go next should the team look to move him.
While fans are anxiously awaiting, it isn’t something that Dak Prescott is too worried about. After the team’s OTAs on Wednesday, he spoke about the contract situation and is exhibiting a lot of patience.
“I don’t play for money. Never have never cared for it, to be honest with you, yeah. Would give it up just to play this game. So, I allow that to the business people to say what it’s worth, what they’re supposed to give a quarterback of my play, a person of my play, a leader of my play. For me, it’s about, as I said, control what I can control and handle that part and the rest will take care of itself,” Prescott said.
Dak Prescott has said that he wants to remain with the Dallas Cowboys. Owner Jerry Jones has shared the same sentiment. So, what is the hold-up on getting a deal done so this partnership can continue?
Could Dallas not be truly convinced Prescott is the guy to get them over the hump? He has helped lead them to three straight 12-5 seasons, but their success in the regular season has not carried over into the postseason.
The Cowboys haven’t played in an NFC Championship Game since they won the Super Bowl in the 1995 season. That is by far the longest drought of all Texas sports, as the Texas Rangers won the World Series last season and the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars are taking part in their Conference Championships.
“It’s not jealousy, but yeah, it fires you up, 100%,” Prescott said. “Yeah, any competitor should, damn sure, in my position, leader of the team, understanding what winning means here, not getting it done, and then watching your brothers across the city go and make these things happen, I want it for them. I want it because it only raises the stakes and makes it tougher on me. And I’m for that. Go win it. Rangers did it. Other two go do it. Put more f—ing pressure on us.”
It will be interesting to see what kind of deal the two sides can work out. If an extension isn’t completed by next March, Dak Prescott will count more than $40 million against the salary cap in dead money.
